How to stay safe when driving through a work zone

It doesn’t matter if you’re driving on the interstate or in the city, don’t be surprised if you come across a work zone. If this happens, you must change your driving style to improve the safety of you and everyone else on the road.

Here are several things you can do to stay safe when driving through a work zone:

  1. Slow down: When you slow down, it’s much easier to make snap decisions, such as if another driver cuts you off. Know the speed limit and stick to it no matter what.

  2. Prepare for everything: With so many moving parts, you never know what will happen in a work zone. For example, a construction vehicle could pull out in front of yours. Or maybe a construction worker darts into traffic for some reason.

  3. Obey all road signs: Work zones typically have special road signs telling you what to do. These can inform you of a new speed limit or changing traffic patterns.

  4. Don’t follow too closely: Even if traffic is crawling, leave enough space between your vehicle and the one in front of yours. This can help prevent a rear-end collision.

Driving through a work zone is not the ideal situation, but it’s something you’ll have to do from time to time.

If another driver makes a mistake that causes a car accident, move to the shoulder of the road and call 911 for help.

Your health is top priority, so receive immediate medical treatment. After that, contact your insurance company, read the police report and take steps to protect your legal rights.
