Don’t do any of these things at a DUI checkpoint

When you least expect it, you may find yourself driving directly into the teeth of a DUI checkpoint. Before you have time to think, you find yourself face-to-face with a police officer.

Although this is a stressful situation, you don’t want to do anything that will heighten the officer’s awareness and make them suspicious.

Here are several things you should never do at a DUI checkpoint:

  • Don’t talk back: It’s easy to become so frustrated that you blurt something out that you’ll regret. For example, don’t tell the officer that it’s against the law to stop your vehicle at a DUI checkpoint, as this isn’t true. It’s best to follow direction and maintain a calm demeanor.
  • Drive erratically: Once you realize you’re heading into a DUI checkpoint, slow down, stay in your lane and steadily move toward the officer. Erratic driving, such as multiple lane changes or abrupt braking, will make you stand out.
  • Don’t resist arrest: If you’re arrested for driving under the influence, remain quiet and follow directions. The more you say the more likely it is that you’ll slip and provide evidence that can be used against you in court.

A DUI charge is a big deal, but it doesn’t always result in a conviction. There are numerous DUI defense strategies you can employ, all of which are designed to help you prevent a conviction or lessen your punishment.

Once you understand your charges and legal rights, you can settle on the defense strategy that puts you in a position to prevent a conviction and the consequences associated with it.
