Do these things if you’re pulled over by police

The last thing you want to see when you’re driving is police lights in your rearview mirror. If this happens, slow down to see if the officer is attempting to pull over your vehicle. If they are, move to the side of the road and put on your hazard lights.

Once you come face-to-face with the officer, here are some of the many things you should do:

  • Stay in your seat: Getting out of the car is a big mistake, as the officer may feel threatened. Stay where you are unless you’re directed to do otherwise. Make sure your passengers do the same.
  • Provide any requested documents: This typically includes your driver’s license, registration and proof of insurance.
  • Remain calm and polite: Your attitude can go a long way in the officer letting you off with a warning.
  • Ask questions: If you don’t know why you were pulled over, ask. If you don’t understand the charges outlined on the ticket, request clarification.

As you do these things, remain focused to ensure that you understand what the officer is saying. Also, once the officer leaves your vehicle, you can take notes, such as the name of the officer and what they said to you.

Even though it’s frustrating to receive a ticket for a moving violation, it doesn’t mean you have to pay the fine and deal with the aftermath (such as an increased insurance premium). Instead, as you revisit the violation and learn more about your legal rights, you may come to find that you can fight back with the hope of reducing the impact.
