Reckless driving: Things you need to know

As a driver, you know how important it is to follow the rules of the road. You also know that a simple mistake could lead to serious trouble, such as being pulled over by a police officer or causing an accident.

It’s important to understand that there is more than one type of reckless driving. Once you know what this traffic violation is all about, there’s a greater chance you’ll do your part in avoiding trouble.

In short, reckless driving is a willful disregard for safety. Furthermore, you can be charged with reckless driving even if you didn’t cause an accident or property damage.

Some of the most common forms of reckless driving include:

  • Attempting to elude a police officer, such as when he or she puts their lights on to pull you over
  • Driving 25 mph (or faster) over the speed limit
  • Racing on the road
  • Passing another vehicle when prohibited, such as on a two-lane highway

Think about your driving history. Have you ever made one or more of these mistakes? Do you continue to do so, even though you know it’s illegal?

If you are pulled over by police and cited for reckless driving, it’s important to read your citation in full as to better understand the charges. You may come to find an inaccuracy.

In the event that you don’t agree with the citation, you need to learn more about your legal rights. You may be able to fight back in court, all with the hope of having the ticket thrown out.
