Driver license violations: Things to know

If you live in the United States and have the intention of driving a motor vehicle, you must first obtain a license. Without this, you’re not legally permitted to take to the road.

Unfortunately, there are times when motorists break the law by driving without a license. This typically fits into one of two categories:

  • You make an honest mistake, such as leaving your driver’s license at home in your other wallet or purse
  • You are trying to circumvent the system, such as because your license was suspended as the result of a DUI conviction

Here is a list of the most common driver’s license related violations:

  • Driving with an expired license
  • Failure to apply for a license within the allowed time
  • Driving on a license that is temporarily or permanently suspended
  • Failure to provide proof of a valid license when requested by law enforcement

Is it a big deal?

Any driver license violation is a big deal, as it can result in a variety of punishments.

First and foremost, the officer will look at the violation itself. If you forgot your license at home, for example, you may receive a basic ticket that can later be dismissed by the traffic court if you show proof of a license.

With a willful violation, however, the penalties can be much more severe. This can include additional suspension of your license or even revocation. On top of this, you could receive a ticket and/or be charged with a misdemeanor.

If you are charged with any type of driver license violation you should find out why, learn more about your legal rights and then devise a defense strategy.
